Emperor Elagabalus is assassinated, along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, by the Praetorian Guard during a revolt. Their mutilated bodies are dragged through the streets of Rome before being thrown into the Tiber.

十九歳の皇帝ヘリオガバルスが近衛隊プラエトリアニによって暗殺。


Elagabalus, also known as Heliogabalus (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus), was Roman emperor from 218 to 222. A member of the Severan dynasty, he was Syrian, the second son of Julia Soaemias and Sextus Varius Marcellus.
In his early youth he served as a priest of the god Elagabalus in the hometown of his mother's family, Emesa.
As a private citizen, he was probably named Sextus Varius Avitus Bassianus.
Upon becoming emperor he took the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus. He was called Elagabalus only after his death.

Elagabalus developed a reputation among his contemporaries for extreme eccentricity, decadence, and zealotry.
This tradition has persisted, and with writers of the early modern age he suffers one of the worst reputations among Roman emperors. Edward Gibbon, for example, wrote that Elagabalus "abandoned himself to the grossest pleasures and ungoverned fury".

Umegatani Tōtarō II (梅ヶ谷 藤太郎) was a sumo wrestler.
He was the sport's 20th yokozuna. Umegatani had a great rivalry with yokozuna Hitachiyama Taniemon 常陸山谷右衞門. Their era was known as the Ume-Hitachi 梅常陸 Era and it brought sumo to heights of popularity never before seen in the Meiji period.

He is also known in engineering for his work on analog computers, for founding Raytheon, and for the memex, a hypothetical adjustable microfilm viewer with a structure analogous to that of hypertext.

In 1945, Bush published the essay "As We May Think" in which he predicted that "wholly new forms of encyclopedias will appear, ready made with a mesh of associative trails running through them, ready to be dropped into the memex and there amplified".
The memex influenced generations of computer scientists, who drew inspiration from its vision of the future.
He was chiefly responsible for the movement that led to the creation of the National Science Foundation.

ein österreichischer Koch und Konditor; er gilt als der Erfinder der international bekannten Sachertorte.

16-jährig und Lehrling im zweiten Jahr in der Hofküche des Hauses Metternich, als der Herr des Hauses im Jahr 1832 seine Küche anwies, für sich und seine Gäste ein besonderes Dessert zu kreieren. „Dass er mir aber keine Schand’ macht heut Abend!“, sagte er. Doch der Chefkoch war krank, und so musste – zumindest der Legende nach – der Lehrling Franz diese Aufgabe übernehmen. Die von diesem komponierte Schokoladentorte soll den Gästen sehr gemundet haben – womit die Geschichte der Sachertorte begann.

16 years old and apprentice in the second year in the court kitchen of the Metternich house, when the master of the house in 1832 instructed his kitchen to create a special dessert for himself and his guests. "That he does not scare me tonight!" He said. But the head chef was ill, and so had - at least according to legend - the apprentice Franz take over this task. The chocolate cake composed by this one is said to have tasted very much the guests - which began the story of the Sachertorte.

American psychologist and computer scientist who is considered one of the most important figures in computer science and general computing history.

He did much to initiate this by funding research which led to much of it, including today's canonical graphical user interface, and the ARPANET, the direct predecessor to the Internet.

1920/0311：日本vsロシア「尼港事件」發生

Николаевский инцидент Nikoláyevskiy Intsidyént
「尼港」とはロシアの都市「ニコラエフスク」の略号。
冬には港が氷結して交通が遮斷されるニコラエフスクを、ロシア人三千･朝鮮人一千･中國人三百のパルチザンが來週、占據し、掠奪虐殺など縱におこなった。同時に、日本軍守備隊に武器の引き渡しを要求、これにたいして決起した日本軍守備隊を中國海軍とともに殲滅すると、老若男女別なく數千人の市民を虐殺した。そのなかには日本人の居留民をはじめとして領事一家なども含まれてゐた（日本人の犠牲者は判明してゐるだけでも731名）。建物は破壊され、街はまさしく廢墟となった。

この事件が結果的に日本の反撥を招いて、1918/08に始まった日本のシベリア出兵を長引かせた。

ein deutscher Kaufmann, Finanztheoretiker, Sozialreformer und Begründer der Freiwirtschaftslehre.

主著『自然的経済秩序』では、あらゆるものが減価するのに通貨だけが減価しないために金利が正当化され、ある程度以上の資産家が金利生活者としてのらりくらり生きている現状を問題視し、これを解決するために自由貨幣、具体的には「スタンプ貨幣」という仕組みを提案した。これは一定の期間ごとに紙幣に一定額のスタンプを貼ることを使用の条件とすることで通貨の退蔵を防ぎ、流通を促進させ貸出金利を下げるのが目的である。他に、男性に経済的に依存することなく女性が子育てに専念できるようにするための、自由土地の思想に基づいた母親年金も提唱している

日本では地域通貨とゲゼル通貨が関連づけて記憶されているが、彼自身は地域通貨（正確には国家以外が管理する通貨）には反対し、国家が責任を持って管理しインフレもデフレもなく流通する通貨制度を理想とした。

ケインズは『雇用・利子および貨幣の一般理論』でゲゼルの思想を考察し「将来の人々はマルクスの精神よりもゲゼルの精神からより多くのものを学ぶであろう」と斷言した。

ドイツの作家のエンデはゲゼルの影響を受けてゐることは、彼の代表作『モモ』を讀めば解る。

1931/0311：映画初期の大監督 Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau 188831、死去

In 1931, in collaboration with documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty 188451, "Tabu" was completed, but just after that, he died on Santa Monica by car accident on March 11.

The two had been deeply intrigued by the issue of measurement error in science and had published a landmark paper in Reviews of Modern Physics in 1934. On reading of Shewhart's insights, they wrote to the journal to wholly recast their approach in the terms that Shewhart advocated.
The encounter began a long collaboration between Shewhart and Deming that involved work on productivity during World War II and Deming's championing of Shewhart's ideas in Japan from 1950 onwards. Deming developed some of Shewhart's methodological proposals around scientific inference and named his synthesis the Shewhart cycle.

First Punic War: Battle of the Aegates: The Romans sink the Carthaginian fleet bringing the First Punic War to an end.



ポエニ戰爭：紀元前250年前後、三度に渡ってイタリアと地中海を挾んだアフリカ大陸北岸のカルタゴとのあひだでおこなはれた戰爭。
「ポエニ」のラテン語 Punici はカルタゴを建國したフェニキア人を意味する Phoenici から派生した。


第一次のポエニ戰爭の勝利はロウマをイタリア半島を越えて、地中海的規模の大國にした記念碑となった。地中海に浮かぶ島國だったシラクサ（シチリア）は、同盟國ではなくロウマのコンスルが支配するロウマ初の属州となった。

司馬炎023690、第五代魏皇帝＝元帝＝曹奐024603から帝位簒奪、魏、滅亡。

：司馬炎023690、魏の名族である司馬氏の出身。司馬昭021165、生母は王元姫021768、その一男。
：若年より「寛恵にして仁厚、沈深にして度量あり」と賞讃された貴公子で、期待にたがはず司馬氏の官職を繼承した。
：0264、父が晉王を賜ると、その後繼者になった。當初、父は三男の司馬攸024883を後繼者に考へてゐた（理由は略す）。が、重臣の諫言により、司馬炎を世子としたとされる。
：父の司馬昭021165歿するとその跡を繼いだ。同じ年の十二月、司馬炎は賈充・裴秀・王沈・羊祜・荀勗・石苞・陳騫らと計って、魏の元帝に禪讓を迫り、帝位を簒奪、「魏」を滅ぼし「晉」を建て、「泰始」と元號した。
：卽位の翌年一月には、一族の二十七名を郡王に任じ各地に封じた。これは魏の失敗を繰り返さないための施策であった。
：司馬炎の治世の初期は賢君と云っていいものであった。名望ある學士を招き、民心を安堵させるべく民爵の贈與をおこなひ、旧王族の任官禁止を解除し、また、魏を建國した曹操015520の王子で、兄の曹丕018726に排斥された曹植019232の子の曹志??0288や魏と闘った蜀の諸葛亮018134の子孫なども招いて任用した。
：0279、賈充と楊済を主將副將として呉の討伐を命じ、東西から二十萬の軍勢となって呉を攻めた。翌年、呉を滅ぼし、晉による中國の統一がなった。
：統一なると、彼の氣持は朝政への興味を失っていった。その後の彼の業績として特筆すべきは、0280太康元年に始めた占田･課田法（詳細は史料不足で不明）であった。

：司馬炎は女色に耽ったことで後世に汚名を遺した。0273、彼は後宮に入れるための五千人の女を得るために、一時詔勅を以て婚姻を禁止した。また、呉を滅亡させた時には呉の皇帝の後宮から五千人を自分の後宮に入れた。合計一萬の宮女を養って、司馬炎は羊に引かせた車で後宮に通ったといふ。そこで、後宮の女たちは皇帝の羊の足を止めるべく、自室のまへに竹笹を置き、盛り塩を置いた。それが、今日いまだ日本でおこはなれてゐる盛り塩の起源となった、とする說もある。

｛こんな逸話を遺すやうでは司馬炎もたいした男じゃなかった、と私は思ってしまった。他に快樂はいくらでもあるでせう。皇帝ならばいつでも充たせる快樂に室より兩で耽溺するやうでは、どうもね。失望しました。と同時に、興味が潮が引くやうに引いてしまった。なにが「若くして寛恵にして仁厚、沈深にして度量あり」だよ。中國の人物評はこんなのばっかりだ。

067三条天皇譲位、068後一条天皇卽位、外祖父の藤原道長、攝政となる。

道長の時代、その娘の彰子の時代、すなはち紫式部097331の時代、女房文藝の時代
この時代の日本の後宮は文藝サロンの場であり、世界史上もっとも文化的に洗練された後宮であったらう（直前の司馬炎の後宮と比べて、みるまでもない）。
公家の子女が宮女として出仕し、その才媛ぶりでたんなる美人ぶりではない魅力をふりまて、まさに百花齊放、多種多彩に開花して、或意味、日本の文藝がもっとも繁榮した「現場」であった。
そのなかでも、道長の長女で、一条天皇に入内して中宮＝皇后となった上東門院彰子098874のもとに集められた女房たちの多彩さと云ったら ――
『源氏物語』を千夜一夜した語部、紫式部097331
生來の恋愛歌人で道長に「浮かれ女」と冷やかされて和泉式部0978??
歌人としては和泉に敵はないし物語作者としては紫式部に劣るだらうが、どちらもこなした赤染衛門095641
『あらば逢ふ夜の』物語の作者（私はよく識らない）出羽辨1007??　
「いにしへの奈良の都の八重櫻けふ九重ににほひぬるかな」の即興一つですっかり評判をとった伊勢大輔098960
等々、しかもかうした文化サロンがひとつだけではない。ふたつもみっつも、いくつもあった。

彰子の好敵手（といふか親父たちが娘を手駒に競ひあってゐた）であった、彰子よりは少
し先輩となる中宮定子のサロンには、あの清少納言096625がゐた。なにより、定子自身が才學に長じてゐたことは清少納言の達筆の活寫によって想像できる。一条天皇はこの定子を寵愛した。
定子は北家通隆095395の長女で、一条天皇に入内し中宮となった。
ところが、この入内した定子にあたへる稱號のことで、先日話した「中宮」宮職の呼稱が深刻な問題となった。
一条天皇の皇后に立てられて定子は当然「中宮」を號した。しかし、その当時、律令が定める「三后」のうち、「太皇太后」は三代前の皇后の昌子内親王、「皇太后」には一条天皇の生母の藤原詮子、「中宮」には先々代の皇后、藤原遵子がゐて（天皇を幼時段階で即位させるからこんなことになる）、すべて埋まってゐた。
定子の父の通隆はそこに無理矢理割り込ませて娘を立后させるために、本來「皇后」の別名である「中宮」を皇后から獨立させて定子にあたへ、遵子の「中宮職」を「皇后宮職」と改め、「中宮職」を定子のために新設した。苦しまぎれの奇策であり、評判は芳しくなかった。
めでたく中宮とはなったが、しかし、定子の凋落は早かった。
0995、父の通隆が没去すると、政權は（当時の政界に太母 GreatMother のやうな存在であった）國母の東三条院詮子096202の差配で、定子には叔父となる道兼が後繼者になったが、道兼が急死するとその弟の道長へとお鉢は移り行き、定子の沒落が始まる。これに追ひ打ちをかけたのが、翌年四月に引き起こされた、定子の兄である伊周、弟の隆家らによる花山院奉射事件＝長徳變であった。これにより二人は左遷となり、その時初めての子を懷妊中であった定子も内裏を退出、自邸に戻ったところに偶然逃げこんできた兄弟が逮捕されるを目の當たりにして、發作的に鋏を取りみづから落飾してしまった。これが五月一日のこと。そして、夏には二条宮が燒亡した。秋には母が物故した。
こんななか、定子は長徳02(0996)十二月十六日に一条天皇には第一子となる女子を出産した。翌年、兄弟の罪は許された。一条天皇は定子が生んだ脩子内親王との對面を我慢できず、反對を押し切って（出家後の后の入内は異例中の異例であった）、定子をふたたび宮中に迎へた。しかし、宮中での定子の扱ひは酷いものであった。だが、 一条天皇の定子への思ひは心遣ひの入ったものであった。
0999、定子は一条天皇の第一皇子となる敦康親王を出産した。これを見て、すでに彰子を一条天皇に入内させてゐた道長は彰子の立后を急いだ。皇太后詮子096202の支持もあり、 長保02(1000)二月二十五日、女御彰子があらたに皇后に冊立され「中宮」を號し、先に中宮を號してゐた皇后定子は「皇后宮」となった。史上初めて「一帝二后」状態となったのである。｛ま、藤原氏がやってきたのはみんなかうしたごり押しだった。平城京時代の、光明子立后の時以來。そして、それが一度成立してしまへば後は前例となり、有職故實の傳統となってしまふのだ。
定子は三子目となる次の子に難産して、子は無事生まれたが、定子は産褥死。その死に臨んでの彼女の遺詠は「夜もすがら契りしことを忘れずはこひむ涙の色ぞゆかしき」と自省とはいへ悲哀にみちたものであった。

定子の死後、その遺児たちにも不運は取り憑いたままであった。敦康親王は嫡男でありながらつひに立太子されることもなかった。

彰子の事に戻ろう。
定子亡き後、一条天皇の後宮は彰子の一人舞臺となっていった。しかし、なかなか懷妊しないので定子の遺児、敦康親王を手元に引き取って養育した。
寛弘05(1008)0911、彰子はやうやく一条天皇には二男となる敦成親王（068後一条敦成100836）を生んだ。その時の道長の欣喜雀躍ぶりは紫式部がその日記に書きとめてゐる。翌年、たてつづけに男子、敦良親王（後朱雀敦良）を出産。
寛弘08(1011)/0613、死に臨んだ一条天皇は皇太子の居貞親王（067三条居貞097617）に讓位。そして、彰子所生の敦成親王が立太子された。
この立太子の事を彰子は（うそかまことか）一条天皇の眞意を思ひ、またわが子として育てた定子の生んだ敦康親王が選ばれなかったことで父の道長を憾んだ、といくつかの当時の日記や物語は傳へてゐる。

Miyoshi Nagayoshi, eldest son of Miyoshi Motonaga, was a Japanese samurai and daimyō who was lord of the Miyoshi 三好 clan during the Sengoku period.
He held the court titles of Shūri-dayū (修理太夫) and Chikuzen no Kami (筑前守), and was also known by the more Sinic reading of his name: Chōkei (長慶).
During his tenure, the Miyoshi clan would experience a great rise of power, and engage in a protracted military campaign against its rivals, the Rokkaku and the Hosokawa.

酒を惠んでもらって囘るその姿は、女子供に「乞食靜月」と蔑まれたが、旦那衆は彼に瘋狂を見て、文人として扱った。

Quatuor pour la fin du Temps 世の終りのための四重奏曲 といふタイトルでまづ私は惹きつけられてしまった。そして、聞こえてきた音樂は ―― 
聞き慣れた西洋音樂とはまるで異質な、西洋とは多分異質な感覺の東洋人の私にとってもまるで異質な、鳥たちの聲は時々聞こえるのだが、しかしけっして地上的な感じではなく、まさにその標題の一つである、鳥たちの深淵する世界、 …… 
黙示録的と云へばさうなってしまふのだらうが、人間的といふより惡魔も含めての天使的な、とでも云ったやうな本質的に異質性を持った「ひびきといかり」、私はいつしか闇のなかにうづくまる孤獨な鳥となって耳を澄ましてゐる …… 
初めて耳にするやうな異國性の強い音樂はさらに私を引きずりこんでいった。
それが、第二次世界大戰でドイツの捕虜になって、収容所内で、1941年の冬、メシアン自身がピアノを担当して初演された。そのピアノは所々弦の切れたアップライトだったといふ。
私が買ったレコウドはその初演の時のメンバによる？（ピアノはメシアン自身だった）演奏だった。
それは、私にとってもっとも深々とした音樂體驗の一つとなった。

漢武帝-15987、劉徹、考武皇帝。漢景帝の十男（九男とも）。
先に皇太子に立てられた長兄の劉榮を押し退けて十六歳で卽位。この卽位には太皇太后の竇氏の意向が強く働いてゐたため、卽位當初は彼女が實權を掌握してゐた。
皇后には、父の景帝の同母姉の娘、すなはち姪となる陳皇后であったが、仲はよろしくなく、竇太皇太后が逝去すると離縁した。

呉楚七國の亂により、有力者が共倒れとなったことで、若き武帝の政治的野心である封建的中央集權化は促進された。諸候王の權力増強を禦ぐためにも各候國の領地の細分化を許す＝推温の令を用ゐた。官吏任用法として郷擧里選法を定めた。そしてブレインに迎へた董仲舒-17604の獻策により「五經博士」を設置、官學を儒教的なものに統一した。

體制が強化、安定すると、武帝は邊境の匈奴征伐を開始した。高祖劉邦-24795が匈奴の冒頓単于??-174に敗北して以來、漢は北方問題を遠ざけてゐたが、武帝は攻勢に出た。
匈奴に敗れて西方に退いた大月氏へ張騫??-114を派遣し、匈奴の挟撃を狙った。
同盟はならなかったが、張騫の捕虜生活も加へた長旅は漢帝國に西方の最新情報をもたらした。
武帝はさらに、匈奴征伐の將軍に衛青??-106やその甥の霍去病-14017を登用し、彼等は戰果を擧げて匈奴を追ひ拂ひ、西域との交通（シルクロウド）が可能になった。さらに李廣利??-088 に命じて大宛國を攻めさせ、念願の天馬「汗血馬」を手に入れた。
また、南方の越も手に入れ郡縣に組み入れた。東方は衛氏朝鮮を滅ぼし、楽浪郡などの漢四郡を設置した。
李廣利??-088にはさらに匈奴討伐を命じ、その支援として李陵??-074を送った。が、日程が違ひ、合流するまへに李陵軍は匈奴の本隊三萬と遭遇、六倍する相手に李陵軍は奮戰すること八日、匈奴兵一萬を討ち取り、その事を武帝に報告したが、衆寡の事實に次第に劣勢となり、つひにやむなく降伏した。これを聽いた武帝は激怒、群臣は恐れをなして李陵ために辯護する者はなかった。辯護するどころか武帝の激怒に追從する者ばかりであった。たゞ一人、太史令の司馬遷-14586が（李陵とは何の關係もなかったが）李陵の善戰と無實とを辯じたが、武帝の怒りに油を注ぐこととなり、司馬遷は獄に下され、腐刑に處せられた。司馬遷が不朽の名作『史記』を作るのはこの後のことである。

武帝は自分の業績を自畫自贊して、泰山に封禪の儀を擧行して、上天に奉上した。

『古事記』完成、太朝臣安萬侶ら、元明天皇に獻上

『古事記』の成立についてはいまだに謎に包まれてゐる。『日本書紀』といふ正史を作りながら、ほとんど同じ内容の歴史書がどうして必要だったのか。むしろ、そのやうな存在は國史の正統性に邪魔になる可能性がある。しかも、『古事記』はその正統性を序文において主張してゐるのである。
無論、この序文の眞僞についての疑惑はある。序文の内容が、正史の『日本書紀』と矛盾したり不明であったりする部分が多いのである。しかも、『日本書紀』にもその次の正史でである『續日本紀』にも『古事記』の存在證明をする記載は皆無である。
しかし、僞書と證明できる確證もない。きはめて不可思議な、ミステリアスな謎に包まれ、その虹彩のなかで日本の神話が語られて、或意味申し分のない日本の聖書となってゐると云ふべきなのかも知れない。
｛私は、私のやうな者が古代にもゐて、歴史と文學といふことを思ひ考へて、一書を歴史的に、別に文學的手法を許した一書を一對に作ったのかな、とかなり本氣に思ってゐた。『古事記』の魅力は、殊にその歌謡にあったことからそんな放恣な想像をしてみたのであった。 …… 


『古事記』と『日本書紀』、その内容は大同小異と云っていいほどで、登場人物も名前こそ相違するが同一人物、だが、比べてみると大きくその役囘りやら性格付けがまるで相違してゐる部分がある。
そんな實例で一番目立つのが「やまとたける（『古事記』は倭建命と記し『日本書紀』は日本武尊と記す）」の物語であらう。
そして、ほとんどの日本人が知ってゐるヤマトタケルの物語は『古事記』の描いたヤマトタケルの悲しみを漂はせた英雄物語のはうだ。『古事記』の倭建命の武勳は、すくなからずその父である景行天皇の武勳であり、日本武尊は脇役とまでは云はないが『古事記』のやうな精彩さはない。
詳しい比較對照は Wikipedia ja にあり、これが一番便利で解りやすいだらう。

物語としては、あきらかに『古事記』のはうが、ヤマトタケルの悲劇性を表現して、きはめて物語的である。これと比べれば、『日本書紀』は登場人物の性格の一貫性は弱く（要するにキャラ立てができてゐない）、史實を時系列で列記したと云った感じで、歴史に近いと云っていいだらう。｛どうしても私は歴史と物語の一對性で思ひ考へてしまふ。

日本の詩歌の原点とも云ふべき「やまとはくにのまほろば」の絶唱は、瀕死の悲劇の英雄が口にするからあれほどまでに感動的なのであって、王者の國譽め歌ではそれほどの感動のチカラタカラは持ち得ない。歌は同じであってもその詠はれた情況が漂はせる氣配といふか、アウラが全然感動をことなったものにするのである。

ところが、である。ヤマトタケルにおいては『古事記』『日本書紀』の物語/歴史の關係はこのやうであったのだが、次に來る菟道稚郎子をめぐる悲劇ではこの關係、『古事記』物語、『日本書紀』歴史の組合せが逆轉してゐるやうに私には感じられたのであった。
記紀のもっとも重要な主張と思はれる「國讓り」をめぐっての話は、何度か登場人物を變へて語られてゐるんだが、そのなかでもこの菟道稚郎子の「國讓り」の話が最も手の込んだ内容に筋立てされてゐる。こゝでも『古事記』と『日本書紀』の構想と造形はかなり相違してゐる。
悲劇好みの私が好んだ菟道稚郎子の物語は『日本書紀』のはうであった。
『日本書紀』では、次兄の（後に仁徳天皇となる）大雀命に菟道稚郎子（父親の應神天皇は末子を皇太子に選んだ）は國讓りしようとするが、兄が受けないので、最後には自害してまで讓ってしまふのである。『古事記』ではただたんに菟道稚郎子が早逝したために、問題なく大雀命が卽位することになってゐる。

私は、彼等に逢ひに行くかのやうに大和への旅人となったのであった。
或日或時ふと「ナポリを見てから死ね」と呟いた私は、日本人なら「大和を見てから死ね」かと飜譯して、大和の國への旅人となることにきめてしまったのであった。

Colloquially referred to as the New World, this second super continent came to be termed "Americas", deriving its name from Americus, the Latin version of Vespucci's first name.

The Allies on Java surrender to the Japanese in the Pacific War. All of the Dutch East Indies will remain in Japanese hands until the end of the war.

In addition to authoring a history of Japan and a number of works defending the right of Go-Daigo's line to the throne, Kitabatake fought in defense of the Southern Court as a member of the Murakami 村上 branch of the Minamoto 源氏 clan.

この海戦は鉄板装甲の動力軍艦（装甲艦）同士の歴史上最初の戦闘として有名であり、

1868/0308(慶應04/0215)：日本[幕末]、堺事件、發生
Sakai incident: Japanese samurai kill 11 French sailors in the port of Sakai, Osaka.

是日、午後三時頃、フランス軍のコルベット鑑 Dupleix  （1864の下關砲撃に參加したこともある）は日本滯在中のフランス要人を迎へるべく堺に入港し、また港内の測量などをおこなった。

この間、士官以下數十名の水兵は上陸し、堺の街を遊覧した。その騒々しさに住民は苦情を日本の警備隊に持ち込み、堺の守護を担当してゐた土佐藩の八番隊と六番隊の隊長らは水兵らに歸鑑を支持したが言語通ぜず、騷ぎ納まらず捕縛しようとしたが、水兵らは土佐藩の隊旗を奪って、逃げまはった。かうした成行に激昂した土佐藩兵は發砲、フランス兵側も應戰した後、フランス水兵に射殺あるいは溺死で合計11名の死者を出した。いづれも二十歳代の若者であった。
事件の成行については證言者によっておほいに食ひ違ひ、フランス側は強硬に「突然銃撃を浴びせれた」と主張した。


｛この事件より少し遡った時点から解説していけば、
：土佐藩の箕浦猪之吉が率ゐる八番隊は、鳥羽伏見戰直後の慶應四年、一月九日（舊暦日付）八つ時(1400)に京都を出立、淀城へ向かった。皇軍總裁の仁和寺宮警護の土佐藩兵先鋒隊と交代するためであったが、同日夜到着した時にはすでに城を出て大阪へ向かった後であった。
軍監の林茂平の判斷で、この八番隊は翌日早曉に淀城を立ち、淀川を下って同日夜、大阪で仁和寺宮隊と合流した。この時には、警護の兵は薩摩藩兵に代はってゐて、土佐の八番隊の當初の目的はなくなってゐた。
：一月十一日、八番隊の新たな任務が、堺町内の警護ときまった。当時、堺は大阪町奉行の域内であったが、一月七日の大阪開城で（町奉行の同心らは逃亡し）大阪町奉行の機能は停止状態にあった。そのための堺警護であった。
：一月十六日（1868/0204）神戸で突發した事件のことが箕浦の耳に入った。その事件とは、神戸の三宮神社前で、備前藩の隊列の前をフランス水兵が横切り、備前藩は無禮者を負傷させ、銃撃戰に發展し、おりから居留地豫定地を檢分中の歐米諸國公使らの方向へ銃撃してしまった。歐米諸國は激怒、明治維新政府にとって最初の外交問題となった。
：この神戸事件に箕浦は憤怒するものがあった。他にも箕浦を苛立たせる出來事があった。大阪の林軍監より「中國四國征討総督の姫路進發のため堺の土佐藩兵の一部を大阪に戻せ」との命令。これでは任務の遂行ができぬと判斷した箕浦は増援要求を、みづから大阪の軍監府に出向いておこなった。そして、要求が通り、京都から西村佐平次が率ゐる六番隊が送りこまれた。二月八日のことである。

（フランス側）二月十五日、ヴィヨウ、ロアらフランス一行は、大阪から兵庫の領事館への歸路を、陸路を使ひ、堺に寄らうとして紀州街道を南下した。外國事務局から何の通報もなかった土佐の守護隊は、同日の昼頃、大和川にかかる大和橋で引き返らせた。
そして、堺港から上陸してきたフランス兵士の事件となっていった。
｛詳しくは、森鴎外186222の『堺事件』を讀むといい。青空文庫にもある。

（土佐藩）事件の報告は翌日の朝には京都にゐた山内容堂182772のもとに届いた。二月十九日早朝、土佐藩邸に滯在してゐた英公使館員に、藩士處罰の意向を佛公使に傳達するやう依頼した。夕刻には大阪に戻った英公使館員によって、兵庫に滯在してゐたロッシュに傳へられた。ロッシュは各國公使と談合、「下手人の斬刑、陳謝、賠償」など五ヶ条からなる抗議文を提示した。狀況は軍事的にも日本に不利であり、明治政府は、賠償金十五万ドルの支拂ひと發砲者の處刑などすべての要求を呑んだ。
：土佐藩は、事件に關係した隊士二十九名に訊問、全員が發砲を認めた。だが、全員の處刑は日本の世論が激發することを懼れた（あるいはそう相手に思はせるべく）明治政府は、處罰内容の輕減を求めた。そして、隊長以下二十名まで値切った。正副指揮官の四名、残りの十六名は神社での籖引きで決めた。

殺害された水兵十一名の葬儀は、神戸居留地の外人墓地で、駐日公使 Léon Roches 180901･駐日英公使 Harry Parkes 182885 の他にオランダ公使など在阪の外交官が立ち会って埋葬された。ロッシュは悲痛な調子で早朝に弔文を読み上げ、そこに復讐を誓ふ文言を撒き散らした。ちなみに、この二人「パークスとロッシュはお互いに憎みあい、二人の女のように嫉妬しあっていた」さうな。

（死刑執行）慶応四年二月二十三日（1867/0316）、大阪裁判所の宣告により、堺の妙國寺で刑の執行が始まった。
切腹の場面は酸鼻をきはめるものとなった。切腹の隊士らは腹から贓物を掴みだし、居竝ぶ外國人を恫喝しつゝ果てていった。そのあまりの凄慘さに、フランス軍の艦長は被害者と同數となる十一名が切腹したところで、外國局判事の五代友厚183685に中止を要請した。
｛つい後十年前には、街中でのギロチン斷頭や Robert-François Damiens 171557の八つ裂きの刑を見物してお祭り氣分になってゐたフランス人がこれしきのことで動揺したとも思はれぬが、この中止要請についてはいろいろと理由を付けて「弁解」してゐる。

（外交決着）翌二十四日、外國事務局総督の山階宮は大阪鎭臺外國事務兼務の伊達宗城181892をともなひ、フランスの旗艦に行き、ロッシュと會見し、明治天皇からの謝意と宮中への招待を傳へた。この時、フランス側は同數の処刑で滿足することで寛大な態度を示すことができたとして、残り九名の助命を了承した。二十五日は土佐藩主、山内容堂が乘船、謝罪した。

事件後、大阪堺では、切腹隊士の墓が設けられた寶珠院に浪花っ子が詰めかけ、切腹した者を「後殘念樣」、命助かった者を「後命運樣」と呼び、彼等の死棺となるはずだった大瓷に入ったりして、こんな歌謡が流行させたさうな
「今度泉州沖で、土佐の攘夷が、大あたり、よか、敵は仏蘭西、よっ程 ゑじゃないか、よふか、よか、よか、よか、」
「妙国寺、妙国寺、土佐のおさむらい腹を切る。唐人見物、ビックリシャックリと、おおさビックリシャックリと。」

｛この事件、といふよりはこの事件を取りあげた森鴎外186222の『堺事件』が、私にとって最初の「歴史と文學」の問題を意識させた、私にとっての「事件」であった。
もっと正確に云ふなら、森鷗外の「歴史其儘と歴史離れ」を手懸かりに噛みついていった大岡昇平の『堺港攘夷始末』であった。
その頃の大岡は或種狂犬のやうに「歴史と文學」にかんして噛みつきまはってゐた。
その最初の犠牲は、
しかし、歴史を成してゐるもの。それらの文獻はつまりは文字で作られ、それらの記録は所詮は事實といふより、いづれにしろ個性的とならざるを得ない記録、本人がさう意識するとしないとに拘らず、文章とはさういふものだ。文章化とは必然的に恣意的なものとならざるを得ない。
相對性理論を持ちだすまでもあるまいが、對象を觀察する視点によって事實は事實そのものといふより解釋されたものとなってしまはざるを得ないのだ。
「信用ならざる語り手」といふ問題を歴史もまた本質的に抱へ込んでゐるのだ。
それらの欠点を回避するために複数の視点からの記述を用ゐる。無論、それでより立體的に事實を再現できるであらうが、しかし、そこには多くの錯走する解釋によって、錯亂する虹のやうな影を帶びることになっていくであらう。
事實、歴史はつねに解釋によってその意味を變へられていってゐる。
つまり、歴史は擬似あるいは似非學問化された物語、文藝の一種にすぎないと極端に云へば私は思ふやうになった。
人は歴史を記憶するためには、物語化させてしまふのだ。信じたいやうにしか記憶されないのだ。
抑、客觀的な歴史といふものが理想體であって、あるいは理論體であって、我々が手にするのはそのサブモデルでしかないのだ。
鷗外の『歴史其儘と歴史離れ』があまりにも圖式的すぎたのだ。歴史そのものが物語であり、結局は鷗外は彼の物語を歴史といふ自意識のもとで書いたにすぎない。
大岡には、この鷗外の定義によって、圖式的に對比的な二つのものとして並べられることになった歴史と文學といふ常識が頭のなかにできあがってゐた。彼は、その圖式といふか公式を疑ふことは一切なかった。その公式によって、歴史を盾に取り、文藝を横樣に切りつけていったのだ。
原典史料に如何に正確に從はうとも、その原典の内容が史實に忠實な記録であったかどうかの保證はない。
物理的な条件が整ったとしても、それについての意味付けはどこまでも記者の私意＝恣意を排除できない。
疑へばキリがない。だから、歴史家は原典となる史料まで行き着くと、それを史實として絶対視してしまふのである。
勿論、いくらでも、かぎりなく事實なるものへ近づいてはいけるだらうが、けっして事實として確定させることはできない。せいぜい、義經は反っ齒出っ歯の小男だったといった事實へと近づいて、露惡趣味的となって、文藝の眞實をぶち壞す偶像破壊くらゐの意義しか、歴史家の努力の行き先は持ってゐないだらう。なるほど、さういふかたちでの文學と歴史の對立關係は成立するかも知れないが、それは事の本質ではあるまい。
そんな義經は誰も信じない。信ずるより先に義經は忘れられ、歴史の彼方に忘却されてしまふだらう。

鴎外自身は、自分の作物がアポロ的で、ディオニッシュにしようと努力したことはないと斷言してゐるが、その歴史物の多くに私はディオニッシュなものを強く感じる。彼の歴史物の劈頭となった『興津弥五右衛門の遺書』からしてさうであり、たとへば、代名詞のやうに有名な『阿部一族』にしても、阿部一族が漂はせる自滅への意地といふか意志、ロゴスよりもパトスに突き動かされていく人間の行動が描かれてゐるであらう。そもそも、人間が自分自身に氣付いていくうち、アポロ的はものからディオニュソス的な理解へと深化していったのが歴史的經過でもあった。今時（勿論鷗外の時代も含めて）アポロ的に人間を理解してすませてゐられるわけがないのである。そんなのは子供用かせいぜい大衆文藝の世界にしか通用しないであらう。

｛アポロニッシュとは「簡淨」の文體、晩年の彼が理想とした文章を云ってるだけなのかも知れない。勿論、さうした簡淨要訣のアポニッシュな文章がディオニッシュな人間を描くときに不適切といふわけでない。むしろ、さうした明晰さな文體のはうがおどろおどろしい物語には適切であるかも知れない。

つまり、その後の日本の文藝界で喧しい議論となる「歴史と文學」の問題は、鷗外による一對性の成立の段階で齟齬があったと云はなければならない。

鷗外は「歴史の自然」と云ふ。歴史は人工物の堆積したものだ。それを廢墟のやうな自然と見立てるとしても、一つ一つ手に取れば、かつて人が作った人工物であり、人工物の積み重なりを自然と呼んでみたところで、それは鷗外一流の感傷にすぎまい。
山椒大夫の話は、鷗外自身が云ってるやうに歴史といふより物語である。
彼は物語から物語を作ってみせたにすぎない。それをさも歴史の一場面のやうに創作させてみただけだ。
山椒大夫、安寿と厨子王の物語と種となる史實はあったかも知れない。だが、それは語られ始められた時、文學と化し、語られ續けることによって、物語として洗練されて、あげく、鷗外の手が加はり、日本文學きっての名文章となったのである。そして、この鷗外のこの文藝をきはめた作品が、後世には他のメディアの原作となって日本の物語を語り描きつづけていくのである。
鷗外は歴史に遊んでゐたわけではない。彼の遊んでゐたのは物語の世界であった。
むしろ、この随筆の題目は『物語其儘と物語離れ』とでもすべきであったらう。

# どれだけ多くの一次資料を集めて読み込んでも、語り部の数だけ「歴史」が存在する以上、必ずはっきりしない「藪の中」というものが残る。そして、そこを埋め合わせる想像において初めて「当事者達が何を考えたか」、という仮説が立てられ検証されるのだが、その仮説の置き方において初めて「小説家」の能力が発揮される。ただ、それは最後の最後まで控えておき、可能な限り一次資料を積み上げて、まずはどこまでもぼんやりとした「史実」を掴むことに第一の優先順位を置く。このような「歴史的情報の処理」（大岡「歴史小説の方法」）

東京渋谷驛前で、忠犬ハチ公、野垂れ死


まるで『涅槃圖』ですな

ハチと命名された犬は、秋田犬のオス（多分名前からしてさうだらうね）であった。生まれは秋田縣秋田郡（この先、もういいよね。
飼ひ主は当時「東京府豐多摩郡渋谷町」の現在の澀谷區のどこかに住まひする大學教授の上野英三郎氏であった。上野氏の專門は農業土木で農學博士、東京帝國大學の教授であった。出身は三重縣一志郡｛これもこの先、もういいよね。
上野氏は愛犬家であった。欲しくてしやうがなかった秋田犬の子犬を買ひ「ハチ」と命名した。すくすく育ったハチは主人と相思相愛、いつも一緒に付いて囘り、送り迎へをするやうになった。
だが、その翌年、不幸がハチを襲ふ。1925(大正14)/0521、主人の上野教授が講義中に腦溢血で急逝。それが分からぬ畜生の悲しさ、
いやいや、さうではなかった。現場を見てきたやうに證言する人によれば、主人が亡くなった時ハチは三日三晩、何も食べなかったさうだ。 …… そんな忠犬の話、どこかで讀んだ氣がするが思ひだせない。あ、思ひだした。その一つを、森鴎外186222の事を書いたから、彼の書いた小説の例からあげれば、たしか『阿部一族』に、忠犬の殉死の話が出てくる。そいつも主人の死に物食はぬ状態になってゐた。
主人のゐなくなった犬は奥さんの親戚の呉服屋に預けられたが、人なつっこい性格からかハチは秋田犬の大きさで來客にとびかかるのでどうしようもなく、淺草の知り合ひの人に預けられた。しかし、こゝでもハチは揉め事の原因となった。それで、致し方なく上野氏の家に戻された。
ハチの心は主人とともに過ごした澀谷にあった。しかし、澀谷に戻ったハチは嬉しさあまりか欣喜雀躍、所かまはず驅け囘り、こゝでも近所迷惑の犬となり、置いておけないとなり、上野家に出入りしてゐた植木職人でハチのことを子犬の頃から知ってゐる犬好き人の所に預けられた。あゝ私は全然識らなかった、主人と死に別れた子犬のハチがこんなにも辛い、餘計者の境遇になってゐたとは。

かうしてやゝ落ち着いた環境に落ち着いた頃には、早くも上野氏の死から二年余が過ぎてゐた。ハチはすっかり成犬の秋田犬となった。彼は時々いや屡々、犬舎を拔けだしては昔懷かしい渋谷驛界隈をほっつき歩いて、おそらく主人との愉快だった日々を懷かしみ、悲しみを紛らはしてゐたにちがひない。
食事は預けられた家に戻って食べてゐたといふ。その往還の際には途中にある主人だった人の家に必ず立ち寄って、窓から中を覗いてゐたといふ。｛家族の人はあんまり犬が好きじゃない、といふか嫌ひだったんだらうね。
渋谷驛界隈の繁華街をうろつく大型犬は人の目に付き、子供の惡戲や大人の虐待を受けることも少なくなかったが、デクノボウの振りをして（實際にさうだったのかも知れないが）やりすごした、と思ひたい。體は大きいが、氣のおとなしい犬であったのだらう。
人々の野良犬に向ける敵意のやうなものが、次第に無關心はものになり、やがて同情を誘ふやうになっていった。人の心のフシギさである。昔この犬は、と上野氏時代のことを思ひだして、美しく語りだす人も出てきた。あゝさう云へばと肯く人も増えてきた。
そこに、それらを取り纏めるべき役割の人が登場してくるのだから、事實は小説より奇なり。その人は、日本犬保存会の初代會長であった。彼は渋谷驛あたりで野良犬生活してゐる秋田犬の姿に哀れを催し、ハチの事を一部始終書いて朝日新聞に投稿した。その投稿を受けて、新聞社が動きだした。美談は線路に乘って、物語となって走りだした。
新聞に載ったことがハチの運命を劇的に變へることになった。たんなるハチは「忠犬ハチ公」となって、『里見八犬傳』の九番目の日本犬のやうに超有名な犬となっていった。
誰者がエサをくれるやうになった。もう空腹になることはなくなった。惡戲も虐待もなくなった。諸手をあげて歡迎され、愛撫される存在となった。澀谷驛口界隈の道祖神のやうな、馬頭観音のやうな存在に見えてくるやうになった。
かうして渋谷界隈の人々はハチの石像なり銅像なりが欲しくなってきた。

まるで現代の道祖神か馬頭観音のやう、

主人を忘れない「忠犬ハチ公」といふ美名で全國的に有名になっていったのは上野氏逝去から七年目のあたりからであった。新聞が爭ふやうに美談へと脚色し、讀者は感涙を浮かべて家庭團欒家族圓滿、すべては忠犬ハチ公のおかげであった。小學校の修身の教科書にも取りあげられた。世界的な愛犬団体『ポチクラブ』から表彰もされた。
そのあまりの人氣は、映画に作られることになった。その映画にも特別出演することになった。忠犬ハチ公は物語となり神話となり、ブランドとなり、ビジネスとなっていった。
つひには、ハチ公いまだ生前中ながら銅像制作の話が持ちあがり、驛前に堂々完成、ハチ公おんみづから参列して除幕がなされた。その銅像は戰爭に狩り出されお役に立ち、敗戰後は新たに再び作られた。忠犬ハチ公の人氣は永遠に不滅のやうであった。

主人上野氏の死から十年近く經った 1935(昭和10)/0308（この頃、日本は軍國化を急ぎ次の年には二二六事件が起こります）、午前六時を過ぎた頃、澀谷川にかかる稲荷橋付近、酒店北側路地の所で野垂れ死にしてゐる犬が發見された。ハチであった。
解剖してみると、その胃袋には焼き鳥の串が三四本入ってゐた。アルコウルが檢出されたかどうかは記してない。
解剖され標本を採られた後、ハチは剥製にされた。名人のその名も高い剥製氏のお手並みで偉容と云っていい、堂々たる秋田犬の姿となってハチは永遠に蘇った。いや、ハチではなく忠犬ハチ公。これでつひに「忠犬ハチ公」の物語がが完成した。


　追ひ書き、
｛なかにはリアリスティックな譯知り口調で、「軍國主義の当時、軍部は忠義の生きた實例が欲しかったのさ。女子供にも容易に理解できるやうな。それを新聞社が識って、美談を作っていったのさ」と云ふ者もゐれば、「驛の近くが好きだったのは、屋臺の焼き鳥が目当てだったんじゃないの」と云ふ者もゐれば、「世の中が求めてゐるものが、一つの聖なる物語へと具現化されていく、そんな都市傳説のもっとも成功した例」と
無論、かうしたクソリアリズムの物の見方は偶像破壊が目的の、昨今の學者連中の惡しき傾向であり、相手にするにも及ばないのであるが、唐突ではあるが、今夜の私が取り組む破目になった『堺事件』と『忠犬ハチ公』の事例によって、私の見解を云へば、要するに、人々は物語とすることによってしか歴史を記憶しない/できない、源義經は美男の悲劇でなければならず、反っ齒出っ歯の小男などといふ容姿であっては誰も義經に興味關心を持たない、人々が欲してゐるのは歴史の事實ではなく、眞實（信實）化された物語である …… あゝ私も焼き鳥と酒が欲しくなった。

1914, during the First World War he got inspiration for Pythagorean theorem and devised two military laws. These became "Lanchester's law" later called "the law of competition". "Ranchester's law" became famous in Japan as a management theory rather than military.

Lanchester’s Power Laws
Lanchester was particularly interested in predicting the outcome of aerial battles. In 1914, before the start of World War I, he published his ideas on aerial warfare in a series of articles in Engineering. They were published in book form in 1916 as Aircraft in Warfare: the Dawn of the Fourth Arm (Lanchester 1916), and included a description of a series of differential equations that are known now as Lanchester's Power Laws.
